Oconee River Land Trust Day Trip
September 13, 2018

You will learn and see how property owners place conservation easements with a land trust to permanently preserve unique landscapes and green space on an OLLI day trip Thursday, September 13. This follows a class offered at River’s Crossing on Wednesday, September 12, that will provide understanding of land trusts and conservation easements and will prepare you for the excursion the following day. Your fee of $51 will cover

the class presentation, and all costs of the day trip, including charter transportation and guided walks at the sites. You will pay for lunch on your own as we visit Oxford Café Bon Appetit on the campus of Oxford College, which offers locally sourced fruits, vegetables and meats, including vegetarian and gluten-free options.
The properties, in Newton County, include forests, ponds, streams and granite outcrops. The sites are protected under conservation easements held by the Oconee River Land Trust (ORLT), an Athens non-profit. Our guides will include a noted author and expert on granite outcrops who will discuss the ecological and botanical importance of these delicate and unusual geologic features.
At the September 12 classroom presentation at River’s Crossing, an ORLT presenter will explain how easements work, benefit land owners, and their importance in fostering environmental, agricultural, historical, cultural and educational values in local communities.
The tour is suitable for those who can walk comfortably over sometimes uneven terrain for a total distance of three miles. You will need protection from sun exposure and insects. Due to the need for a special van to traverse these sites space is limited to 13. Cost is $51/person.
