Our Leadership

Monte Broaded – President

Monte Broaded is a comparative sociologist, now retired, who specialized in the study of contemporary Chinese social issues.  In the 1980s and 1990s he conducted several large-scale survey research projects in mainland China and Taiwan.  He taught at the University of Pittsburgh for more than a decade, and then spent a year and a half in the School of Asian Studies at the University of Sydney in Australia.  From 2000 to 2015 he served as Director of the Center for Global Education at Butler University in Indianapolis, where he managed the university’s extensive international programs and relationships.  Having spent the first half of his career focused on China, he was very pleased to spend the second half engaged with all the other important and interesting regions of the world as well.  He and his wife, Eleanor, moved to the Athens area in mid-2015 and quickly became involved with OLLI and other community groups and associations.  He is currently pursuing an interest in ceramics at OCAF in Watkinsville.  He also enjoys cycling, playing pickleball and racquetball, and playing a little classical guitar when he thinks no-one is listening.
